Can you believe there’s a day devoted to loving your pet? I won’t argue with that. I’ll take any excuse to celebrate my little buddy! Love Your Pet Day will be celebrated this Saturday, February 20th!
I’m using this holiday as an opportunity to introduce everyone to Scrappy, my sweet boy! (Are you ready for some intense gushing and PDA?) Scrappy was a lucky find, S and I decided to get a dog, we had been “shopping” around the local shelters (adopt don’t shop!) for a small lazy dog, one that would accommodate our busy lifestyle. We arrived at Anti-Cruelty Society of Chicago on Sunday, April 24, 2011 only to find out the adult dog we wanted had been adopted. In the cage above the dog we had come in for, we saw this little body carrying the biggest ears in the world, pawing at the door to get to me. I turned to S and asked him if we could take this PUPPY out to play. (Now remember, we wanted a lazy dog, a puppy was not in our plan.) We sat out in the courtyard with this hyper, mischievous little buddy for 10 minutes. This puppy was so curious he tried to investigate everything and would choke himself on his leash trying to get to where he wanted to go. He was everything we thought we didn’t want, but I knew in my heart that he was our dog, I looked at S and asked if we could keep him. Being the ever accommodating man, S agreed and we were downstairs filling out the adoption papers for this 4-6month old Silky TERRIER PUPPY. (A puppy and a Terrier?! What were we getting ourselves into?!!)
Anti-Cruelty had already given this little cutie monster a name, Scrappy. Now, when I tell you they couldn’t have picked a better name for this little guy, I couldn’t be speaking truer words. This guy gave us a run for our money and continues to do so. But, he is the sweetest, smartest, funniest, most loving dog you’ll ever meet. He runs like a little bunny, he will be your best friend for a treat and will kill you with kisses. He’ll cuddle with you until your heart melts and look at you like you’re the most beautiful thing he’s ever seen. It goes without saying that I am obnoxiously obsessed with this little guy! Scrappy completes our little family!
Being a Chicago Pup, we make sure we take Scraps out to the park as often as we can, in the summer. He is wildly obsessed with pet stores, running in grassy areas and dining al fresco with us. Here’s a list of his favorite things!
Favorite Places to Play
Lincoln Park– Scraps loves going on long walks through this beautiful park that runs along the east side of the city
Dog Beach at Belmont Harbor– So here is the thing, Scrappy is a little guy and hates the water, so we don’t bring him to Montrose Dog Beach, but he’s a big fan of the Dog Beach at Belmont Harbor, it’s small, gated and he gets to bunny hop through the sand.
Big Star– 1531 N Damen
DryHop Brewers– 3155 N. Broadway
Athenian Room– 807 W Webster Ave
Flub-a-dub-chub– 3021 N. Broadway
Wilde Chicago– 3130 N. Broadway
Le Pain Quotidien– 1000 W Armitage
Favorite Places for Treats and Toys
BarkBox– A monthly subscription filled with healthy treats and fun toys! Each box is uniquely themed. This month was for the Lunar New Year (we were obnoxiously excited about this theme- see dumpling toys below)!
Wigglyville– 1137 W Madison St.
Krisers– Multiple Locations
Pet Stuff– Multiple Locations
Favorite Pet Sitter and Walker
Dogs Deserve It– 1341 W. Fullerton
Rover – Rover seems like really unique and cool concept. We haven’t given them a try yet, but it seems like the pet version of Care.com. We would 100% use this service for Scrappy and look forward to giving them a try. It seems like you can browse through the list of sitters/walkers, choose who you like and book them. The best part is they offer insurance coverage for each stay.
Do you have any pets? Are there any places they like to go? If so tell me all about them in the comments below!
